Baritone Benjamin Appl is praised for a voice that “belongs to the last of the old great masters of song” with “an almost infinite range of colours” (Süddeutsche Zeitung).

A former BBC New Generation Artist, Wigmore Hall Emerging Artist and ECHO Rising Star, he was named Gramophone Young Artist of the Year in 2016. Having studied in both Munich and London, he was later mentored by Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, whom he describes as “an invaluable and hugely formative influence.”

Appl appears regularly at major festivals and venues worldwide including Ravinia, Schubertiade Schwarzenberg, Wigmore Hall, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, the Elbphilharmonie and Carnegie Hall. Recent orchestral partners include the Royal Concertgebouw, Oslo Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, Staatskapelle Dresden, Vienna Symphony and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic with whom he was Artist in Residence in the 2024–25 season.

On the opera stage, Appl’s highlights include Papageno Die Zauberflöte at the Hamburgische Staatsoper and Opéra Rouen, his role and house debut as Harlequin Ariadne auf Naxos at Gran Teatre del Liceu Barcelona and he looks forward to his upcoming house and role debut at the Teatro Real Madrid as Mercutio Roméo et Juliette.

His recordings span Bach and Schubert to Hans Sommer and Sibelius. Recent releases for Alpha Classics include Lines of Life, For Dieter (2025) and The Christmas Album (2024) as well as award-winning Heimat (2017) for Sony Classics.
