Imogen Lewis Holland (Managing Director):

A “Buhnentier (stage animal)” (Musik Theater) with a "timbre pulpeux et la colorature virtuose (a voluptuous timbre and virtuosic coloratura)" (Diapason), French soprano Julie Fuchs has established herself as one the most exciting opera singers of her generation; dazzling audiences across the world’s premiere opera houses and concert halls. Winner of two Victoires de la Musique prizes,  and the second prize at Operalia, her repertoire ranges from baroque to contemporary music with a focus on Mozart and Bel Canto heroines.

Julie planned to begin her 2020/21 season at the Opera de Paris in her role debut of Adina L'esir d'amore and her house debut at the Staatsoper Berlin in the role of Aspasia (also a role debut) in a new production of Mitridate, both of which were sadly cancelled due to the Covid-19 crisis. In the new year, Julie hopes to return to Paris to make her role debut as Pamina Die Zauberflöte. In March, she makes her house debut at Teatro di San Carlo as Fiorilla Il Turco in Italia, and in the summer, she returns to the Aix-en-provence Festival as Susanna Le nozze di Figaro. Concerts include a New Year’s Eve Gala with the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, a recital at the Palais Garnier, Paris and the reopening gala at the Opéra Grand Avignon.

Operatic highlights of previous seasons include Marie La fille du régiment at the Wiener Staatsoper, Norina Don Pasquale and the title role in L’incoronazione di Poppea at Opernhaus Zürich, Leïla Les pêcheurs de perles at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées (a recording of which was released on the Pentatone label in early 2018), Comtesse Adèle Le Comte Ory at Opéra Comique, Giunia Lucio Silla at Teatro Real Madrid, Musetta La boheme at the Bayerische Staatsoper, la Folie in Rameau’s Platée and Nannetta Falstaff at Opéra national de Paris.

An exclusive contract with Deutsche Grammophon, Julie has released two solo recordings: Yes! and Mademoiselle. Her discography also includes a recording of early songs by Mahler and Debussy with Alphonse Cemin, and a disc of Songs for Piano and Voice by Poulenc (Atma Classique).

In 2018, Julie launched an international project which set out to prove that opera is open to anyone who wishes to attend, regardless of their income, background, education or age. Although many opera houses have made great efforts to create programs which aim to make opera affordable to everyone especially in recent years, those who have never been to the opera still often feel that the art form remains closed to them and feel unsure as to whether opera is 'for them'.

Known as the “down to earth diva,” who came from a family of modest means with no background in classical music, Julie is the perfect ambassador for this project as opera was opened to her at a young age.

Julie uses her active presence on social media as a vehicle to promote this initiative. She does this by:

1) Posting content to "open up" the operatic process to her followers and the followers on the @opearisopen account, giving them a behind-the-scenes look, and answering questions in her posts and stories.

2) Posting about the initiatives which dissolve financial barriers, educate or seek to include a broader public at each venue where she sings. (She informs her followers about student tickets, group tickets, senior tickets, last minute tickets etc.)

3) Holding competitions on her social media to win a pair of tickets. To by in with a chance, one of her followers must bring a guest that has never attended the opera. She then meets the winner, and shares their thoughts on social media about the experience.

4) Encouraging her colleagues and the companies where she sings to use the hashtag #operaisopen to spread the message that opera is truly open to anyone.
